The
Golden Concert Choir is excited to retain
David Bell as its Music Director and Conductor.
David Bell is a conductor and composer native to
and living in Denver. He received a Bachelor of
Arts in Music from Colorado College, earning the
David and Karen Smith Cowperthwaite Prize for
Excellence in Music. He then moved to Boston,
where he attended New England Conservatory and
received a Master of Music with honors and a
Graduate Diploma, studying composition with an
emphasis in conducting.
While at Colorado College, Mr. Bell was selected
to conduct the college choir at his graduation
Baccalaureate, a traditional honor for the best
student in the music program’s conducting class.
Also in Colorado Springs, he conducted a high
school choir in singing his own work—a piece
that was commissioned by the choir’s director.
After finishing at New England Conservatory, Mr.
Bell was selected to direct the choir at St.
Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Marblehead,
Massachusetts.
The choir, a group of volunteers from the
congregation, varied greatly in vocal ability
and experience. Mr. Bell helped to improve the
choir’s ensemble and performance skills, as well
as their understanding of the works they sang.
Following on the positive results of this
endeavor, he proposed, planned, and helped the
choir prepare for their first full-length
concert, which became an annual event during his
tenure at St. Andrew’s. He is currently the
choir director at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church
in Denver.
While at St. Barnabas, Mr. Bell has planned
music and helped the choir prepare for its gift
to the congregation on Christmas Eve, a
half-hour concert. He has also helped it prepare
two performances of “Music’s on the Menu,” a
musical revue dinner performance, as a
fundraiser for the church. One year, the
performance involved works of musical theater,
and the next was a selection of big band jazz,
Dixieland, and other popular 1930s and ’40s
songs. Mr. Bell and the choir also worked
through and performed one of his own works. Also
in conjunction with the church, Mr. Bell is a
board member of the performing and visual arts
series, Arts on Vine. He has helped organize and
present visual art shows and performances of
music and theater through this organization.
Mr. Bell is also a composer and has written
works for a variety of ensembles, both choral
and instrumental, and for solo voice and
instruments. He received a grant from the State
of Massachusetts for a chamber work included in
a Contemporary Composers concert. He has been
commissioned for several works, including a
piece for mezzo soprano and string orchestra,
and his latest commission, a choral work with
organ and solo trumpet, was performed by the St.
Barnabas Choir in March 2007.
